Cape Town

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel.

From here we embark on a half day excursion to Robben Island, the unique symbol of “the triumph of the human spirit over adversity, suffering and injustice”. Robben Island is visited every year by thousands of people eager to understand and honour the important aspects of South Africa’s history that it represents.  The ferry departs from the Nelson Mandela Gateway at the V & A Waterfront.

There will be some free time this afternoon.

Dinner tonight is a chic African experience at Gold restaurant.  Dining at Gold Restaurant begins with the drumbeat of the djembe drum. An interactive drum circle offers you the opportunity to join in and learn how to play the djembe. In no time at all you will be drumming with the rest of Africa!  Before being seated, you will be lead into ancient courtyards where your hands are ceremoniously washed. The cuisine is authentically Cape Malay and African. As you dine you will be entertained by live performances near your table. Guests are welcomed to Gold by the Mali Puppets who sing and dance in time to the drum beats.

Meals: Breakfast, Highlight Dinner

Johannesburg to Maun to Khwai River

After breakfast we head to the airport for your late morning flight to Maun, the gateway to the Okavango Delta (this flight is included with the tour & airfare package). The name Maun is derived from the San word “maung”, which means “the place of short reeds”.

From the airport we transfer to our camp, which is situated in a private concession in the Khwai area. It’s a longer day on the road to reach our destination, and covers some rough roads.

This large area is renowned for its concentration of mammals and it is not unusual to see many different types of wildlife during just one game drive.

We will settle in and listen to the sounds of the African bush. Given your arrival time allows the time, you will go on your first game drive.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch (packed) Dinner (at lodge)

Khwai River, Botswana

It’s a fabulous day ahead for game drives. In our open 4x4 vehicle we will explore the Khwai area on morning and afternoon game drives hopefully spotting a variety of game that frequent this region. Unlike other deltas, it flows into the Kalahari Desert without reaching the coast, which makes it unique. We will float in Mokoros through the thick vegetation of the Delta discovering a variety of birds and wildlife. We stop at a secluded island to take a 1½ hour guided walk hoping to spot elephants, waterbuck or other animals living in this water-filled paradise.

The water from the borehole is slightly salty with high mineral content, a big attraction fo the resident game and bird species in the concession. Then pan is a hive of activity year round.

Namushasha's impressive central entrance, designed in true African style with a wooden chandelier and carved animals, leads guests into the attractive lodge set between the trees. The dining room, with its high thatched roof, is open on the sides to the river world, providing a suitable - and airy - welcome to wonderland.

Nestled on the banks of the Kwando river (Eastern Caprivi, Namibia), Camp Kwando invites you to come and explore the hidden treasures of an untamed land. However, in some destinations the variety of choice for certain special diets may be limited. If you are concerned please check with us before you book.

Cape Town
For the days in Cape Town a local guide is provided. Usually the guide in Cape Town is a different person to the guide for the safari days.

On Safari
This is a private group tour and is fully escorted with an English speaking professional safari guide and a safari driver. Your guide will provide sightseeing commentary and in addition be the liaison for all tour services.

If the group falls below 8 passengers in total then a combined driver-guide will operate the safari.

'African Safari organised by Encounter Travel. Arguably the best holiday I have ever been on. A must on  everyone's bucket list. Thank you ET for a lifetime of memories.'

Christine, 55 years, Queensland

'Awesome is how I would describe the African Safari, it was everything I hoped it would be and more. This was my first solo trip and I am so glad I choose Encounter and will definitely book another holiday with them.'

Jen, 52 years, Victoria

A wonderful tour. Terrific itinerary, good accommodation, great food and fantastic fellow travellers combined to make this one of my best tours ever.
