Much of the jungle has not been cleared and it looks very much as most of the Angkor monuments would have appeared when European explorers first stumbled across them. The day also includes a visit to Banteay Samre, a mid-12th century temple dedicated to the god Vishnu. Time permitting, there is also a visit to the ancient ruin East Mebon.

Finally, enjoy a sunset at Pre Rup, built by Rajendravarman Ii (ruled 944 to 968), and consisting of a pyramid shaped temple. The name means turning the body and refers to the traditional method of cremation.

Angkor Thom - Siem Reap - Battambang

After merely wetting your taste buds to the many wonders of Angkor yesterday, today we visit a couple more temples and ruins before we travel to our next destination Battambang, a small, leisurely city in Cambodia’s vast countryside.

We visit the fortified city of Angkor Thom, enclosed by a wall and wide moats. The city includes many of Angkor's most popular sights. We visit the Terrace of the Elephants, the Terrace of the Leper Kings, then the ruined Baphuon, the Royal Enclosure and Phimeanakas before continuing to the mysterious Bayon Temple one of the most popular and compelling in Angkor.

Next, we have lunch and travel by road from Siem Reap to Battambang (travel duration about three hours).  Dinner this evening is in Battambang at a local restaurant.

DAY 19

Today, there’s morning sightseeing in Battambang by Tuk Tuk, and a full day out that includes highlight visits to the Battambang Museum, a visit to Wat Phiphet Temple and an insight into the thriving art scene of Battambang.

In Cambodia, Battambang is known for its vibrant arts scene and is home to a thriving community of artists.  The city was once considered to be Cambodia's artistic hub, but the arts scene was completely destroyed under the Khmer Rouge regime. Currently, it's undergoing a renaissance, and new galleries and art spaces are springing up all over the city.

The tour begins with a visit to a local cafe and gallery, a trendy cafe and exhibition space showcasing the work of the city's talented artists. Then, continue to nearby art studios to meet and interact with local artists in their work environments.

Following the studio visit, we enjoy lunch at Jaan Bai. This restaurant is a social enterprise that provides training and employment for youth. It has benefited from the support of Vittoria Coffee and training from Chef David Thompson, as well as restaurateur John Fink. All proceeds go to support the Cambodian Children's Trust.

After lunch, there’s time to explore the local market of Battambang and enjoy the tastes of local snacks and some signature Battambang food.

Dinner this evening is at a local Battambang restaurant.

Meals:  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 20
Battambang to Phnom Penh

It’s a full day out including travel by road from Battambang to Phnom Penh with a boat trip to Kampong Luong and sightseeing at Oudong.

From Battambang, we travel southwest and take a boat trip to Kampong Luong, a village located entirely on a criss-crossing network of canals. See a church, a pagoda, a floating school and factories where ice is made to preserve the day's catch of fish. As we continue in the direction of Phnom Penh, we visit Oudong located 40 kilometres from Phnom Penh. Oudong was the former capital of Cambodia from 1618 to 1866. After exploring the temples, enjoy the panoramic views of the Cambodian countryside.

We continue to Phnom Penh and dinner tonight is at a local restaurant.

Meals:  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 21
Phnom Penh

After breakfast, there’s a day of touring to get to know Phnom Penh.

Firstly, we visit the Royal Palace of Cambodia, a complex of buildings, which was built to serve as the residence of the King of Cambodia. The compound was the citadel of King Ponhea Yat (1393-1463) and rebuilt to its present state in 1886, when King Norodom (1834-1904) relocated the royal capital from Oudong to Phnom Penh.

The Royal Palace complex and attached 'Silver Pagoda' compound consist of several buildings, structures and gardens. The silver pagoda is often called the Pagoda of the Emerald Buddha or Wat Preah Kaew Morokot after the statue housed there. The wooden temple was originally built by King Norodom in 1892 and inside its floor is comprised of more than 5000 silver blocks which together weigh nearly 6 tons.

From our visit of the palace we carry on with a visit of the National Museum which contains a vast collection of Khmer sculpture and art. Then to our next museum visit, the Tuol Sleng Museum (Museum of Genocide) for a sombre experience, learning about the a chapter from Cambodia's more recent and tragic past.

Today, we also travel to just outside Phnom Penh, where in a peaceful rural setting, the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek provide a stark reminder of the atrocities committed under the Pol Pot regime.  Thousands of people were killed here between the years of 1976 and 1978 and buried in mass graves.

The day comes to a close with time to explore Psah Thmey, a covered market which is distinguished by its central dome (constructed in 1937).  It is filled with shops selling jewellery, fabrics and many kinds of souvenirs.

Meals:  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 22

Small Group Tours
Travel solo, not alone when you join one of our small group tours. Share your journey, without the drawbacks of big coach tours or the solitude of being alone.
Age-Matched Tours
From our traveller feedback we know that our age-matched holidays are one of the main reasons that solo travellers choose to join us. All our 'Solos Only ' tours are age-matched, making for a better chance that you'll be travelling other like minded single travellers.
