Angkor Thom - Siem Reap - Battambang

After merely wetting your taste buds to the many wonders of Angkor yesterday, today we visit a couple more temples and ruins before we travel to our next destination Battambang, a small, leisurely city in Cambodia’s vast countryside.

We visit the fortified city of Angkor Thom, enclosed by a wall and wide moats. The city includes many of Angkor's most popular sights. We visit the Terrace of the Elephants, the Terrace of the Leper Kings, then the ruined Baphuon, the Royal Enclosure and Phimeanakas before continuing to the mysterious Bayon Temple one of the most popular and compelling in Angkor.

Next, we have lunch and travel by road from Siem Reap to Battambang (travel duration about 3 hours). Dinner this evening is in Battambang at a local restaurant.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today, there’s morning sightseeing in Battambang by Tuk Tuk, and a full day out that includes highlight visits to the Battambang Museum, a visit to Wat Phiphet Temple and an insight into the thriving art scene of Battambang.

In Cambodia, Battambang is known for its vibrant arts scene and is home to a thriving community of artists.  The city was once considered to be Cambodia's artistic hub, but the arts scene was completely destroyed under the Khmer Rouge regime. Currently, it's undergoing a renaissance, and new galleries and art spaces are springing up all over the city.

The tour begins with a visit to a local cafe and gallery, a trendy cafe and exhibition space showcasing the work of the city's talented artists. Then, continue to nearby art studios to meet and interact with local artists in their work environments.

Following the studio visit, we enjoy lunch at Jaan Bai. This restaurant is a social enterprise that provides training and employment for youth. It has benefited from the support of Vittoria Coffee and training from Chef David Thompson, as well as restaurateur John Fink. All proceeds go to support the Cambodian Children's Trust.

After lunch, there’s time to explore the local market of Battambang and enjoy the tastes of local snacks and some signature Battambang food.

Dinner this evening is at a local Battambang restaurant.

See a church, a pagoda, a floating school and factories where ice is made to preserve the day's catch of fish. As we continue in the direction of Phnom Penh, we visit Oudong located 40 kilometres from Phnom Penh. Oudong was the former capital of Cambodia from 1618 to 1866. After exploring the temples, enjoy the panoramic views of the Cambodian countryside.

We continue to Phnom Penh and dinner tonight is at a local restaurant.

Meals:  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 21 – FRIDAY 11 MAY 2018
Phnom Penh

After breakfast, there’s a day of touring to get to know Phnom Penh.

Firstly, we visit the Royal Palace of Cambodia, a complex of buildings, which was built to serve as the residence of the King of Cambodia. The compound was the citadel of King Ponhea Yat (1393-1463) and rebuilt to its present state in 1886, when King Norodom (1834-1904) relocated the royal capital from Oudong to Phnom Penh.

The Royal Palace complex and attached 'Silver Pagoda' compound consist of several buildings, structures and gardens. The silver pagoda is often called the Pagoda of the Emerald Buddha or Wat Preah Kaew Morokot after the statue housed there. The wooden temple was originally built by King Norodom in 1892 and inside its floor is comprised of more than 5000 silver blocks which together weigh nearly 6 tons.

From our visit of the palace we carry on with a visit of the National Museum which contains a vast collection of Khmer sculpture and art. Then to our next museum visit, the Tuol Sleng Museum (Museum of Genocide) for a sombre experience, learning about the a chapter from Cambodia's more recent and tragic past.

Today, we also travel to just outside Phnom Penh, where in a peaceful rural setting, the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek provide a stark reminder of the atrocities committed under the Pol Pot regime.  Thousands of people were killed here between the years of 1976 and 1978 and buried in mass graves.

The day comes to a close with time to explore Psah Thmey, a covered market which is distinguished by its central dome (constructed in 1937).  It is filled with shops selling jewellery, fabrics and many kinds of souvenirs.

There is a mix of days; between more leisurely days and other days that require longer periods on foot, standing, walking and climbing stairs. This tour is not suitable for anyone not able to stand and walk for long periods and/or unable to climb stairs without assistance. You need an average level of fitness (or above) to be suited to this tour.

It’s regular that our trips included welcome dinners and farewell dinners for our groups. In addition, we include other group dining experiences to ensure that everyone has the enjoyment of dining as a group.  There’s nothing better than to share a meal with new friends and discuss the day’s adventures.

We also like to include some evenings when dining is at your leisure. It’s an opportunity to make your own local discoveries.

The hotel breakfasts will generally have Asian/Vietnamese breakfast choices along with Western food choices.

Vietnamese cuisine features a combination of five fundamental tastes in the overall meal. Each Vietnamese dish has a distinctive flavor, common ingredients include fish sauceshrimp pastesoy sauce, rice, fresh herbs, fruit and vegetables. Vietnamese recipes use lemongrassgingermintVietnamese mintlong corianderSaigon cinnamonbird's eye chililime, and Thai basil leaves. Traditional Vietnamese cooking uses fresh ingredients, minimal use of dairy and oil and reliance on herbs and vegetables. The balance use of fresh herbs, meats and the use of some spices helps create the delicious taste of Vietnamese food. It is considered one of the healthiest cuisines in the world.

We advise travellers against street food and that you only dine at places that are recommended by your guide or guide/leader.  By following best advice it’s far less likely that you will become unwell with any stomach complaints.

About the Water in Vietnam
Due to poor quality of drinking water in Vietnam, you must only drink bottled water and only bottled water from reliable sources. Also, use bottled water for brushing teeth. Most hotels have bottled water included in the room for the purpose of brushing teeth.

Please be sure to advise us at the time of booking of any special dietary requirements. We always do our best to accommodate special diet needs and in most cases, special dietary needs can be met. However, in some destinations the variety of choice for certain special diets may be limited. If you are concerned, please check with us before you book.

Checked Luggage – Domestic Flights
Maximum allowance is 20kg for internal flights in Vietnam

Overnight Train Journey
Whilst travelling in Vietnam, there will be an overnight train journey to Sapa, where you will be required to pack a small bag for two nights. Your main luggage will be kept in the hotel in Hanoi. This is due to the limited space on board the train and for the comfort of the passengers.

Overnight Cruise
The same will also apply to the overnight Halong Bay Cruise.

This tour is escorted by an English speaking Vietnamese National, professional tour guide. Your guide is there to ensure the smooth operation of your tour, liaise with the coach driver, hotel and all other service providers connected with our tour. You will find your guide to be passionate about their history and culture and good company.

Touring is by private coach and includes:

  • a one way overnight (sleeper) train journey
  • two domestic flights within Vietnam to reduce travel time
  • an overnight boat cruise on Halong Bay.

The cost of the domestic flights in Vietnam are covered in your tour package price

You may like to purchase a prepaid sim care to take with you while travelling.  These can often be a good option to keep in touch with friends and family back home and it gives you data in order to use the internet.  Be sure the sim card you purchase will cover all the countries you are travelling to.

Many hotels these days offer WiFi—some for free, others for a modest fee. But WiFi floats around elsewhere in Vietnam as well.

If you don’t already use this service, we recommend downloading this application also. It’s a mobile phone App that offers fast, simple, secure messaging and calling for free (data charges may apply – ask your phone provider).

As a general indication, for many of our tours, our guides use WhatsApp to communicate with the group.

'Our encounter trip to Vietnam was more than I expected with a great balance of activities and free time. Great food, friendly people and interesting locations with a rich history. I would recommend this trip to other active singles.'

Gary, WA

'Vietnam holiday was fantastic. Great sights, great people. Way above expectations.'

Joanne, NSW

'I had not travelled overseas before, let alone travelling solo so I was a bit apprehensive. Encounter Travel made it the most stress free experience. They responded to all my queries prior to leaving, did everything they said they would do and the tour was extremely well organised. I enjoyed traveling with other people that were of similar age and stage of life. I will definitely travel with Encounter again.'
