DAY 1 – SUNDAY 7 OCTOBER 2018
Adelaide  - Kangaroo Island

Beginning in Adelaide, we have an early morning meet up at 6.10am to depart from the hotel, to transfer to Cape Jervis, where we board the Sealink Ferry. On arrival to the ferry terminal at Cape Jervis, there will be option of getting some breakfast (at your own expense).

*** Be ready in your walking gear ***

We board the Sealink Ferry at 8:30am for a 9am departure for a very scenic 45 minute crossing, known as the Backstairs Passage, to Penneshaw and Kangaroo Island.

Should I/Shouldn’t I have breakfast this morning?
We’d suggest something to eat before joining the trip. The journey down to Cape Jervis Ferry Terminal is about an hour and a half. We can let guests get off the coach once we are in position to board the ferry. The terminal has a cafe so getting a coffee and muffin is not a problem. Then it’s a 45 minute crossing followed by our first mornings walk. Otherwise, lunch is not offered until around 12.30pm.

Disembark from the ferry and head to the Island Beehive for morning tea (at guests own expense). Here you can try a unique Ligurian or Honeycomb Latte, or the infamous Kangaroo Island home made honeycomb ice cream. This is followed by a 30 minute guided tour of the Beehive (tours run every half hour).

From there it’s onto Seal Bay where we head down to the beach with a local ranger and take part in a tour of the sea lion colony.  Seal Bay is home to the third largest population of the world’s rarest marine mammals – the Australian Sea Lion. We have lunch after our tour and then enjoy a short walk to Weirs Cove Hike. This trail houses ruins of storage buildings and the Cape Du Coedic lighthouse can be seen in the distance as you approach the historic cottages. This great little walk is an absolute delight.

Distance: - walk 1.5 kms to Weirs Cove
walking time: 25 mins

Meals: Lunch, Dinner

DAY 2 – MONDAY 8 OCTOBER 2018
Kangaroo Island

A short drive from our front door this morning is Hanson Bay. From here we head off for our day's walk to Kelly Hill Caves.  We walk along the Island's best known walks, the 10 kilometre Hanson Bay Hike which passes through pink gum woodlands, banksia heath, mallee and coastal heath, past freshwater lagoons and over dunes that provide vistas inland and along the coast.

Once at Kelly Hill Caves we take a tour of the caves and appreciate their amazing limestone formations. We’ll also stop here and have a cup of tea/coffee and a biscuit, then, it’s back to our accommodation to explore the nearby formations of Admirals Arch, home to thriving colony of Australian and New Zealand Fur Seal.

Dinner this evening is a two-course meal prepared by your guides.

We then visit Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary to take a leisurely stroll down the famous koala walk and view these relaxed animals enjoying the shady eucalypt trees. There is a café onsite so guests can grab a coffee if they wish.

This afternoon, we head to the famous Remarkable Rocks. The wind sculpted rocks can be seen as artworks in progress, a 500 million year old story of change.

Your guides will again prepare your two course meal this evening.

DAY 4 – WEDNESDAY 10 OCTOBER 2018
Kangaroo Island

The French explorer, Nicolas Baudin, observed the Kangaroo Island Emu here in 1802, mistakenly identifying them as Cassowary.

After the walk we stop in at Cape Borda Lighthouse. After lunch, we can visit the Bay of Shoals winery just out of Kingscote (towards Emu bay). Take the option to enjoy a glass of wine with one their platters including local produce (at your own expense) while taking in the magnificent view over the vineyards and the Bay of Shoals.

We finish the day in the lovely seaside town of Kingscote.

The views overlooking the Southern Ocean are vast and the track itself is easy. The park is the largest remaining block of wildlife habitat on the Fleurieu Peninsula and is home to an array of native wildlife. The walking trail provides spectacular scenery of the Backstairs Passage, Kangaroo Island and the rugged Deep Creek valley.

Read on for other key trip information that you should know before you decide on joining the group.

TRIP AVAILABILITY
If this trip seems right for you then we encourage you to book early and secure your place with a deposit.  Tour space is limited. To ensure your place, please check trip availability at your earliest convenience.

FELLOW TRAVELLERS
You will enjoy this exclusive group experience with a maximum group size of 10 walkers. It’s likely to expect a group of 7-10 walkers. This tour is exclusively for single/solo travellers.

TRANSPORT
Transport will be by a modern comfortable, minibus and Sealink Ferry between Adelaide and Kangaroo Island.

THE PACE  [3 OUT OF 5] – TRIP PREPARATION
This is graded as an easier walk, as most of the trails are well groomed with only one notable climb on one of the walks.

Walking distances can be between 5 to 10 kilometres each day.

If you are deciding to join an activity based holiday such as this trip, there are a few things to consider.

Basically any fit and healthy person can participate. If you can walk upwards of 10 kilometres in a day, carrying a lightweight day pack you will find the walking activity totally achievable. The minimum requirements to participate are being able to carry a 5 kilogram backpack (that holds your lunch, water, camera, rain jacket plus a few other personal effects).

You also need to be aware that while we typically walk on well forged walking tracks, the quality and the degree of difficulty on these tracks varies a lot. You may find the tracks rocky and “lumpy” underfoot, soft and sandy or muddy and slippery. The prevailing weather can make a track that is typically dry and firm wet and muddy.

You will also, at times, find there is the need to be able to negotiate obstacles such as fallen trees, or sections of scree, or steep steps. None of these would be enough to preclude a healthy and able-bodied individual but they can challenge. So please come along with not only the right footwear and raingear and clothing, but also the right frame of mind.

ABOUT THE MEALS
It’s regular that our trips include some group meals. There’s nothing better than to share a meal with new friends and discuss the day’s adventures.

The food is healthy, hearty and home style. It is not five-star chef prepared dining but the food is fresh and guides make sure it is tasty and plentiful. We can accommodate guests’ specific dietary requirements and can prepare a meal to meet individual needs.

Please be sure to advise us at the time of booking of any special dietary requirements. We always do our best to accommodate special diet needs and in most cases, special dietary needs can be met. However, in some destinations the variety of choice for certain special diets may be limited. If you are concerned please check with us before you book.  We can arrange for gluten free bread, cereal, rice crackers for nibbles and gluten free desserts, given you make this request in advance of the departure date, and no later than 14 days prior to departure.

Breakfast includes eggs, cereals, stewed fruit, toast, spreads and yoghurt.

Lunch can vary from day to day, but includes meat, salad, bread and wraps. As an example, some days a roasted chicken and salad, and others, quiche to mix things up a bit. Each walker prepares their own lunch from the options provided by your guides each day.

Dinner is a two-course meal of main and dessert prepared by your guides. The menu is constantly changing but can include a classic steak on the barbecue, chicken korma or salmon fillet. Dessert can include maple baked apples, pears in red wine, fruit salad or pavlova to name just a few.

Snacks and nibbles – there are plenty of snacks and nibbles during the trips including fresh fruit for the trail, biscuits and/or fruit cake for tea breaks. Each night dips, cheese and crackers are offered for pre-dinner nibbles.

A self-serve trail mix selection at the beginning of each day is also on offer.

GROUP GUIDE
There will be 2 guides who will accompany the group throughout the time on Kangaroo Island.  Your guides are your main points of contact during your walk.
