Starting in the ancient city of Rome then continuing to the Amalfi Coast in the south, before the  tour makes its way north, through Umbria and Tuscany regions.  After Tuscany, the tour visits Venice before a relaxing stay at the beautiful Lake Maggiore in the north and coming to conclusion in Milan.

DAY 2 – MONDAY 14 MAY 2018

Welcome to Rome, Italy, the ‘Eternal City' for a three night stay.

If you have booked the group flight with us, you will be met at the airport and transferred to our group hotel by a private group transfer.

You will have some time at leisure this afternoon before you meet with the group Tour Director for a welcome drink and tour briefing at 5:30PM.   After a long flight the rest of the evening will be at your leisure.

DAY 3 – TUESDAY 15 MAY 2018

A relaxed morning at your hotel.

After a relaxing breakfast, mid-morning we head out for a guided walking tour of Rome. You will be escorted by an expert local guide, as you visit Rome's iconic landmarks and places of interest including entrance to The Colosseum and Roman Forum, to explore ancient Rome.

This afternoon you have time at leisure to enjoy your choice of sightseeing, shopping or relaxing in Rome.

We celebrate our tour commencement with a wonderful group dinner including a glass of Italian wine, at a local restaurant in Rome.

An early breakfast today, and then we complete our discovery tour of the highlights of Rome.  We have a group reservation (no queues) for our guided tour of the Vatican Museums to see Michelangelo's ceiling in the Sistine Chapel plus visit St Peter's Basilica * built around the tomb of St Peter, and designed by some of history's greatest architects, Bramante, Bernini and Michelangelo.

Enjoy the afternoon at your leisure. Shop till you drop, explore more of Rome or you may be tempted to throw another coin into the famous Trevi Fountain to ensure your return one day!

The evening is at your leisure and this evening the chance to make your own local discoveries for a dinner spot. We suggest you ask your tour director for recommendations.

DAY 5 – THURSDAY 17 MAY 2018
Rome – Pompeii - Amalfi Coast 

Today we travel to the Amalfi Coast for a relaxing three night stay.

We get off to an early start to first reach Pompeii where an expert local guide will walk you through the streets of this Roman resort buried by an eruption of the volcano Mt Vesuvius in AD79. From Pompeii it’s only about a forty minute drive to reach the city of Sorrento on the Amalfi Coast

Once we arrive to the Amalfi Coast, you will have some free time at your leisure in the afternoon before we meet for a group highlight dinner at a local restaurant including a glass of Italian wine with your meal.

DAY 6  - FRIDAY 18 MAY 2018
Amalfi Coast

It’s a fabulous day of sightseeing, escorted by your tour director, as we get to know the Amalfi Coast, including a visit to the resort town of Ravello, perched above Amalfi, renowned for its views and wonderful gardens and a visit to Positano.

This evening, why not try the local seafood at a local restaurant for dinner?

DAY 7 – SATURDAY 19 MAY 2018
Amalfi Coast (Isle of Capri)

We take a hydrofoil ride from Sorrento to the Isle of Capri and around the Isle to appreciate the isle’s beauty from the water. By boat, visiting the Blue Grotto (subject to suitable weather conditions), then returning for a tour to Ana Capri.

Before returning to the mainland, there will be some time at leisure in the town of Capri. This evening, another chance to dine locally on the Amalfi Coast with the group.

DAY 8 – SUNDAY 20 MAY 2018
Amalfi Coast – Assisi

From the coast, we depart first thing to make our way to Assisi for a two night stay.   A few hours along the way, we enjoy a guided city tour on foot at the Commonwealth Cemetery of Montecassino. After lunch we take the afternoon to reach Assisi. It’s a scenic drive to the
hill top town of Assisi home of St Francis.

DAY 9 – MONDAY 21 MAY 2018

In the morning, there's a guided city tour on foot to visit the Basilica of St Francis with its magnificent frescoes by the artist Giotto and other highlights of Assisi.

The rest of the day is free to wander the cobblestone streets and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. We come together in the evening for dinner at a local restaurant in Assisi.

DAY 10 – TUESDAY 22 MAY 2018
Assisi - Florence

We depart Assisi to make our way to Florence for our three night stay.

On our way to Assisi, in the heart of Tuscany, on a hilltop stands the majestic medieval walled town of San Gimignano. It has retained all its old streets, its walls, gates, palaces, strongholds and thirteen towers.  There’s a guided city tour on foot to explore this many towered and very charming town with its squares and winding streets.

The afternoon we travel to Florence, just over an hour from San Gimignano and the rest of the day is at your leisure.

DAY 11 – WEDNESDAY 23 MAY 2018                         

In Florence this morning, there's a city tour which includes a visit to the Academy of Fine Arts, to show you Michelangelo's statue of ‘David' in the Academy Gallery. We continue, to visit the Cathedral and Baptistry, Giotto's 14th century Campanile (said to be the most beautiful bell-tower in the world), the ‘Gates of Paradise' and enjoy a view of Signoria Square, the political stage of the Florentines.

This afternoon, there's a wonderful excursion to Greve in the picturesque Chianti region including wine tasting.

DAY 12 – THURSDAY 24 MAY 2018

Time to discover Florence at your leisure. It's a wonderful time for wandering, shopping and simply absorbing the atmosphere.

A gorgeous evening ahead, as we visit the Monastery of Certosa where we'll enjoy a three course menu and welcome drink, along with Tuscan entertainment.

DAY 13 – FRIDAY 25 MAY 2018
 – Pisa – La Spezia

A relaxing start to our day with a mid-morning departure to make our way to Florence via Pisa to Spezia, the eastern end of the Italian Riviera. Your tour director will take you on a guided walking of Pisa.

Today, we stop in Monte Carlo for a highlight Tuscan lunch at a Tuscan farm and winery for some of the best of Tuscan cuisine.

After lunch we make our way to La Spezia, where the rest of the day is at your leisure.

DAY 14 – SATURDAY 26 MAY 2018
La Spezia
 (Cinque Terre)

Today, is the highlight excursion to the Cinque Terre (or the five lands), which were for years only accessible by donkey. Luckily, today we take the train to explore the spectacular area.

Enjoying walking around the postcard pretty villages, which both retain their charm and reputation for producing one of Italy's most sought after and exclusive wines. For the adventurous there is a hill side track which leads from one village to another. There's also the option to return by boat after the walk (which is spectacular) or you can choose to walk further to more of the five villages and then return by train to La Spezia.

After an adventurous day, the rest of the day is at your leisure.

DAY 15  -  SUNDAY 27 MAY 2018
La Spezia – Bologna - Venice

Today, it's a longer drive to cross the Italian peninsular and see the quarries at Carrara, its milky white stone attracting everyone from Michelangelo to Mussolini before we arrive to Venice, a glorious city of quaint bridges, ornate palaces, and gondolas.

On our way, we take a stop to experience an Italian vinegar tasting, before arriving to Bologna.

We arrive to Bologna, a medieval town in northern Italy. Your tour director will take you on a short walking tour and then, you have time to wander at your leisure. More importantly, take the time to enjoy lunch, as Bologna is often regarded as the culinary capital of Italy. The market in the city centre displays an impressive array of deli produce; cheeses, meats, fruits, vegetables and baked delights.

From Bologna it’s a few hours to arrive to Venice Mestre where our hotel is located.

Dinner tonight is at your leisure.

DAY 16 – MONDAY 28 MAY 2018

Your morning tour today is by boat and by foot. 

There’s a walking tour from the famous Piazza San Marco. You'll enjoy a guided sightseeing tour that also includes entrance to the Doges' Palace and a view to the adjoining Bridge of Sighs. Also today there's a visit a glass showroom for an interesting demonstration of the traditional craftsmanship of Murano glassware, unchanged for centuries. We also see visit the ornate St Mark's Basilica.

The afternoon is at leisure to explore Venice on your own.

This evening, we come together again to dine near to Piazza San Marco, Venice a local restaurant with traditional Venetian and regional cuisine and of course, a glass of a Italian wine.  After dinner, we are escorted back to our hotel.

DAY 17 – TUESDAY 29 MAY 2018
Venice – Verona – Lake Maggiore

This morning we drive to the elegant city of Verona. There's a guided city centre walking tour in Verona and it includes entry to the Arena Di Verona, an ancient Roman arena and venue for the opera each summer and entry to Juliet's house and the balcony (from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet).

Lunch is by your own arrangement.

In the afternoon, we make our way to our lake-side hotel at Lake Maggiore.  It’s an impressive lake, south of the Alps. It’s here that you take a leisurely three night stay, at our hotel in Stresa as a finale to your Italian Splendour tour. This evening is at your leisure.

DAY 18  - WEDNESDAY 30 MAY 2018
Lake Maggiore 

Today's highlight is a full day of experiencing the magnificent Lake Maggiore, visiting three of the islands. 

A local guide joins the group to escort us on our cruise to visit the first two islands; Isola Madre being the largest of the Borromeo Islands and Isola Bella. At each of the islands we enjoy a visit to the monumental baroque palaces and their majestic gardens.

Today, enjoy a highlight lunch at a fabulous restaurant on Isola Superiore di Pescatori, the third of the three islands.  Isola Superiore di Pescatori is renowned as a quaint village with its narrow cobbled street, pretty harbour and charming homes.

After lunch, we return by ferry to our hotel.

DAY 19 – THURSDAY 31 MAY 2018
Lake Maggiore 

A day at leisure. Perhaps you’d like to visit Switzerland today; it’s close and easily reached by a short train ride.

Tonight, come together for a dinner at a local Stresa restaurant enjoying a four course deluxe dining experience.

DAY 20 – FRIDAY 1 JUNE 2018
Lake Maggiore – Milan

Today after breakfast we transfer to Milan. There will be a city tour of Milan before a final farewell group highlight dinner.

Our memorable tour comes to an end after breakfast. The remainder of the day is at your leisure until it’s time to transfer to the airport for your onward journey.

Tipping – About the Pre Paid Tips Tipping is customary for European touring. To take the hassle of tipping we have packaged the tour with pre paid tips. Tips are included for all the major services detailed by the itinerary, including tips for your director, coach driver, local guides, wait staff for lunches, dinners, wine & vinegar tastings, hotel porters and boat drivers on boat tours.

The pre paid tips does not cover the tips for room maids, donations, coffee-tea stops, and anything else not mentioned above. For excellent service additional tips for your tour director and driver are gratefully received but not in any way mandatory and entirely at your discretion.


SHARE & SAVE If you are happy to share with a roommate of the same gender, save $2150 on package prices above that include your own room (not sharing).

The airfare is not included with the price. Quotes are provided on request, and are indicative only. Prices are subject to variation until tickets are issued. Tickets are issued once the tour is a guaranteed departure, you have paid the airfare in full and accepted the airfare booking terms in writing. Once the ticket is issued penalties are incurred for changes, and in some cases airfares may be non-refundable. Reservation are made in the name you provide to us with your booking form – this name must match your passport. Failure to provide your name as per your passport may result in an invalid ticket.

Due to airline flight schedules and availability, day of arrival and day of departure may vary depending on your city of departure. If additional nights of stay are required, the cost of any additional night/s of stay applies.

The tour and airfare package includes air taxes to the value of $200 per person. Taxes and fuel surcharges change regularly so above levies are shown as a guide only. At the time final monies are due the amount for the airline tax & fuel surcharge will be updated if there has been any change. An airfare supplement may apply depending on airline availability and departure cities, and this would be advised with your quote. 

To be eligible for the early bird savings you need to book and pay the deposit to secure your booking, and make any progress payment by the nominated date, as per the booking terms.

A progress payment of $2750 for a single room and $3950 for a twin share room becomes due by Monday 15 January 2018, or within 3 days of your deposit payment if your pay your deposit after Monday 15 January 2018. See detailed clause ‘cancellation charges’ for complete details of non-refundable monies.

The airfare included in a package, or otherwise purchased separately may not allow the use of flyer points to upgrade. However, there is the option of paying a surcharge where we would book the airfare which does allow you to upgrade. The surcharge can be quoted at time of requesting quote and is subject to availability.

The airfare offered may not permit frequent flyer points to be accrued. If you wish to accrue frequent flyers points please check with us at the time of booking. We will advise the status and if any airfare supplement applies to book an airfare class that permits the accrual of frequent flyer points.

Share and save with our roommate match option. On your request and subject to availability, we will match you with another group member (same gender) so that you can share a room and take advantage of the twin share price.

Reduced Single Supplement: If we are not able to offer you a roommate match, a 'reduced single supplement' price will be offered. This represents a $500 saving on the standard single supplement price. Alternatively, you have the option decline and receive a full refund of your tour deposit. If you are not prepared to pay for a reduced single supplement we recommend you should not pay for the airfare until you have a guaranteed roommate match, and this is advised by us in writing. If you have arranged the group airfare with us we will not ticket your airfare until such time that you accept the policy for the Reduced Single Supplement This supplement becomes due after we finalise the group and before departure.  The reduced single supplement offer only applies to bookings secured with a deposit by Tuesday 13 February 2018. After this time the offer is at our discretion.

Please note: if a roommate becomes available after receiving advice of a reduced single supplement rate, your booking automatically reverts to the twin share price and any monies paid for the reduced single supplement will be refunded.

Early Check In
If your flight arrives well in advance of the hotel check in time, then we recommend travellers consider booking an additional night at the hotel the evening prior to guarantee a morning check-in. Early check in without payment can be requested, and is at the discretion of the hotel, but cannot be guaranteed.

Late Check Out
If your flight departs after the hotel check out time we recommend that you make an enquiry with us about securing a late check out with payment.  Some hotels will require payment in full of the next night of stay while others may have a rate for a late check out such as a payment to extend check out until 6pm as an example.

Late check out can be requested but without payment cannot be guaranteed.

Group Flight Arrangements
The group nominated flight is with Emirates. In the event seat/s are unavailable in our booking class for the nominated group tour and airfare package, or no availability whatsoever, we may replace this itinerary with Etihad for some or all passengers.  The final itinerary and airline will be confirmed prior to the airfare being issued (ticketed) and will be sent to you to check the reservation details in advance of issuing the ticket.

Other airlines can be requested but the included group airport transfers on arrival and departure may not apply and the tour only price will apply plus the cost of the alternative fare with another airline.

On arrival to Rome (Fiumicino International Airport)
If you have not arranged your flight with us, as part of your package but are travelling on the same flights as our group (such as using frequent flyer points), you can request to join the arrival transfer; a service fee applies.

On departure from Milan (Malpensa International Airport)
On the final day of the tour the group departs the group hotel in Milan for Milan Malpensa Airport to meet the group nominated flight departing Milan.

If you are not joining the group flight, you still have the option of joining the transfer to the airport for another onward flight (no fee applies) but you must advise us of this at the time of finalising your booking and in advance of 45 days prior to the tour departure.

By Train
The train station at Fiumicino International Airport Rome is located within short walking distance of the baggage claim area.

Follow the signs for the train station. There is a Leonardo da Vinci Express train. It departs every 30 minutes from the airport to Termini station. It’s takes half an hour.  Price is from Euro14.  For further information, click here.

When you arrive to Rome train station ‘Termini’ we recommend you opt for a taxi to your hotel. Have cash in Euro to pay your driver.

If you are not travelling on the group transfer on completion of the tour, you may like to consider the option of travelling by train to Milan Airport (Milan Malpensa Airport MXP).

The airport is located in the province of Varese, 50km north west of Milan, and there are two main terminals. The airport is connected to Milan by the Milano-Varese highway as well as by the "Malpensa Express" train and taking about 50 minutes. At the time of publishing this content the fare was Euro12 per ticket.

You will enjoy this small group experience with a maximum group size of 25 travellers. This tour is exclusively for single-solo travellers. Generally, this tour departs with around 16-22 group members.

THE PACE  [3 out of 5]
This tour includes a reasonable amount of sightseeing on foot and is graded as a medium-paced tour. A reasonable fitness level is required to participate in this tour.

There is an exceptional three night stay in Rome, Sorrento, Florence and at Lake Maggiore, and two nights of stay at the other destinations, creating a relaxed tour pace. Then finally, a one night stay in Milan.

The majority of driving days are not too long, with convenient stops at places of interest along the way for refreshments and sightseeing.

Encounter Travel pays a supplement to all hotels for this itinerary so that the passengers who opt to take a single room get a double bed. Throughout Europe the beds can be somewhat smaller than an average queen sized bed here in Australia. For example a standard double sized bed is from 137 – 187cm, in Europe the beds are smaller and average between 120 and 140cm.

If you think that you have been given the incorrect room type anytime while on tour, it’s best to speak directly to your tour director who can sort this out for you at the time.

You should be able to carry your own luggage without assistance and not require an assistance while walking. As mostly tours are by foot, you should be able to walk three to four kilometres during the day, without difficulty.

Travellers of 70 years and over will be required to have a doctor complete a Fit to Travel form.

There’s nothing better than to share a meal with new friends and discuss the day’s adventures.

The meals included with our itinerary are Italian/European cuisine. We include highlight dinners and lunches as detailed by the itinerary. Highlight references that use local restaurants of a high standard or if we use hotel restaurants they are of a high standard. Also, with each included meal a glass of wine is included.

Special Diet Requirements
Please be sure to advise us at the time of booking of any special dietary requirements. We always do our best to accommodate special diet needs and in most cases, special dietary needs can be met. Gluten free pizza and pasta may not be available.

However, in some destinations the variety of choice for certain special diets may be limited. If you are concerned please check with us before you book.

This is a private group tour with a coach driver and English speaking, locally based tour director. Your tour escort commences their services from Italy and is there to assist with group arrangements and to act as the liaison for all tour services. A tour escort is not included for the travel arrangements to/from Italy.

In addition, local guides are included for major sightseeing tours as detailed by the itinerary.

Touring is by a private air-conditioned coach. There is also some boat travel for your visit to the Isle of Capri, around Venice and while staying at Lake Maggiore.

Emirates baggage allowance depends on the class of travel. Economy class passengers are permitted between 20 and 30kg. The total amount will be advised on your ticket. Passengers who travel business class are permitted to carry 40kg of luggage.

If your allowance has increased after having a ticket reissued, we strongly recommend that you carry proof of your original baggage allowance (a print out or screenshot of the original ticket).

You can check in as many pieces of baggage as you need, as long as the total weight is less than the maximum baggage allowance of your class. However, each individual item must weigh less than 32kg in total.

If an individual item has total dimensions (length + width + height) greater than 300cm (118 inches), it can’t be checked in as baggage and will need to be sent as cargo or freight. There are no exceptions to this rule.

Cabin Baggage
Generally, the amount of cabin baggage you may bring depends on which service class you are flying.
First Class and Business Class customers are permitted two pieces of carry-on baggage: one briefcase plus either one handbag or one garment bag. The briefcase may not exceed 18 x 14 x 8 inches (45 x 35 x 20cm); the handbag may not exceed 22 x 15 x 8 inches (55 x 38 x 20cm); the garment bag can be no more than 8 inches (20cm) thick when folded. The weight of each piece must not exceed 7kg (15lb).

Economy Class customers are permitted one piece of carry-on baggage, either a handbag or laptop bag, that may not exceed 22 x 15 x 8 inches (55 x 38 x 20cm) and must weigh no more than 15lb (7kg).
