Welcome to the mesmerising land of Japan — where centuries-old traditions meet cutting-edge modern life. From ancient temples to neon-lit cities, this “Solos Only” journey is a remarkable small group discovery across some of the country’s most iconic highlights.
We begin in Tokyo, Japan’s dazzling capital, with time to explore its contrasts — where old meets new. Then it’s off by bullet train to Nagano, nestled in the Japanese Alps Next, we travel via scenic Matsumoto before arriving in Takayama — a beautifully preserved old-town district known for its heritage charm. From there, we make our way to Kyoto for a three-night stay, soaking up the elegance of Japan’s cultural heart.
Then, it’s on to Hiroshima by bullet train, where we reflect at the Peace Memorial Park and Museum, and take in the views of Miyajima Island and the famous floating torii gate. After a night in Hiroshima, we head to vibrant Osaka.
Our final leg takes us to Hakone, where views of Mt Fuji (weather permitting), a ropeway ride and a lake cruise offer a picture-perfect finale. We return to Tokyo for two more nights, rounding off our adventure with more time to explore, shop, and savour this fascinating country. We start the journey with a gentle stroll through Ueno Park, a cultural hub that’s especially beautiful during cherry blossom season. Dive into local flavours at Tsukiji Outer Market, where street food stalls and seafood vendors buzz with energy. Later, roll up your sleeves for a hands-on sushi-making session with expert guidance – then enjoy your creations for lunch. In the afternoon, immerse yourself in the mesmerising digital installations of TeamLab Planets, a unique multi-sensory art experience like no other. We wrap up the day with a welcome dinner, the perfect chance to get to know your fellow travellers.

DAY 3
Board the sleek bullet train and glide through the countryside to Nagano – a smaller city set against the backdrop of the Japanese Alps, known for its spiritual heritage and mountain air. After some relaxed time and lunch near the station, we visit Zenkoji Temple, one of Japan’s most revered temples. Here, experience the unique “pitch-black tunnel” under the main hall – said to symbolise a journey toward enlightenment. Then, sample locally brewed sake near the temple. This evening, join your group host for an optional dinner at a local eatery.

DAY 4
Today we head into the hills to visit Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park – home to wild macaques that famously soak in the natural hot springs. It’s a rare and fascinating wildlife encounter unique to Japan. Afterward, we travel to the charming town of Obuse for a highlight lunch at a local restaurant.
The afternoon includes a visit to the Hokusai Museum, showcasing the works of legendary ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai. You’ll gain insight into traditional Japanese art in an intimate regional setting. Optional dinner arrangements will be offered this evening.

DAY 5
We journey via Matsumoto, home to one of Japan’s most beautiful original castles, with its striking black façade and wooden interiors. After free time for lunch and a visit to the contemporary Matsumoto Art Museum, we continue to Takayama – a small, atmospheric town nestled in the mountains. Known for its preserved Edo-period streets, Takayama blends history, culture, and warmth in a walkable setting. Optional group dinner in the evening.

Explore the UNESCO-listed village of Shirakawago, famed for its gassho-zukuri farmhouses with steep thatched roofs, built to withstand heavy snowfall. This architectural style is found only in this part of Japan. Later, we return to Takayama where the afternoon is yours – stroll along the historic streets, browse local sake breweries, or relax at a café. We reconvene in the evening for a group dinner.

Start the day at the Miyagawa Morning Market, where local artisans and food stalls offer a taste of rural life. Then stop in Gujo Hachiman – a picture-perfect town laced with canals and waterways – for lunch. In the afternoon, arrive in Kyoto, the cultural heart of Japan with over a thousand years of imperial history. If timing allows, take a gentle walk along the Philosopher’s Path, lined with cherry trees and quiet temples.

We begin with Fushimi Inari Taisha, known for its endless tunnels of vivid red torii gates that lead into the wooded hills. It’s one of Kyoto’s most iconic sites. Then, head to Arashiyama to walk through the surreal Bamboo Grove, where tall stalks sway overhead. A group lunch follows before some well-earned free time. In the evening, your guide can help coordinate an optional local dining experience – Kyoto’s culinary scene is both refined and authentic.

An early visit to the dazzling Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion) starts the day, its shimmering reflection mirrored in the pond below. Continue on to Nishiki Market, Kyoto’s centuries-old food street. Afterward, wander through Gion and Maruyama Park, with cobbled streets, teahouses, and the chance to spot a geisha. We come together again for a group dinner this evening.

Later, travel by bullet train to Osaka.

Travel by bullet train to Mishima and continue to the Hakone region, known for hot springs and Mt Fuji views. Visit like a local. Starting out from Tokyo your guide will escort you to Yokohama City by local transport.
Yokohama, Japan’s second-largest city, offers a contrast to Tokyo with its bayside setting and cosmopolitan vibe. Known for its historic port, vibrant Chinatown, and modern waterfront promenades, it’s a great place to soak up maritime charm and harbour views. A day in Yokohama blends quirk, beauty, and relaxation just a short train ride from Tokyo.

Hotel rooms in Japan are small compared to many western country hotel standards. As a guide four star hotel rooms are 16-20m2, and three star hotels are 10-14m2.
Rooms with double beds are not guaranteed and may be two single beds, even when reserved for one person as double room for solo occupancy. Porter services are not available and travellers are required to manage their own luggage.

Hotel Check In/Out Times
Consider the hotel check in time on arrival and the hotel check out time on departure. If you arrive prior to the check in time, the hotel will store your luggage until the check in time and can also store your luggage until you are ready to depart for your onward journey.
The standard check in time is from 3PM.

Arrival - Tokyo:
There are two airports that service Tokyo; Haneda Airport and Narita International Airport
Haneda Airport, Tokyo is closer to Tokyo City compared to Narita International Airport. Transport services, private and public are a lower cost when arriving to Haneda Airport compared to Narita International.
We offer private transfer services from Haneda Airport only.
If you are making your own flight arrangements, we require your flight itinerary no later than 45 days priors to travel (and even if you are not making airport transfer arrangements with us). Where transfers are part of your arrangement, if your itinerary is not provided to us within the required timeframe, you forfeit the airport transfers, or additional fees may be incurred for the service.

FELLOW TRAVELLERS
You will enjoy this group experience with a maximum of 16 travellers. This is a Solos Only tour (couple free). You are welcome to join with a friend, but couples do not join this tour.
THE PACE [3 out of 5]
Travellers of 70 years or over may be required to return a Fit to Travel form that is completed by their doctor. Porter services are not available and travellers are required to manage their own luggage.
This is a medium paced, small group tour. An good level of tour fitness at least is required for this tour. There may be days of 10,000 to 15,000 steps a day.
There is a mix of days; between more leisurely days and other days that require longer periods on foot, standing, walking and climbing stairs. This tour is not suitable for anyone not able to stand and walk for long periods and/or unable to climb stairs without assistance.
ABOUT THE MEALS
It’s regular that our trips include welcome dinners and farewell dinners for our groups. In addition, we include other group dining experiences to ensure that everyone can enjoy the benefit of travelling and dining as a group. There’s nothing better than to share a meal with new friends and discuss the day’s adventures.

GROUP TOUR GUIDE/S
This is a private group tour escorted by a tour guide, or guides. There may be two or three guides (one at any one time) across the duration of the tour that escort the group for different parts of the tour. Your tour guide is locally based and a tour professional, there to provide guiding services and assist with group arrangements and to act as the liaison for all tour services.
