This ceremony precedes Holi, the festival of colours that welcomes spring. According to legend, Holika was the sister of Hiranyakashipu, who had been granted immunity from fire. She attempted to kill her nephew Prahlada — a devout follower of Lord Vishnu — by holding him in a fire. However, she perished, and Prahlada was saved. The Holika Dahan procession takes place on the evening before Holi.
