New Zealand - Wellington

Averaging 2,059 hours of sunshine per year, the climate of Wellington is temperate marine, (Köppen: Cfb ), generally moderate all year round, and rarely sees temperatures above 25 °C (77 °F) or below 4 °C (39 °F). The city is notorious for its southerly blasts in winter, which may make the temperature feel much colder. It is generally very windy all year round with high rainfall; average annual rainfall is 1,244 mm (49 in), June and July being the wettest months. Frosts are quite common in the hill suburbs and the Hutt Valley between May and September. Snow is very rare at low altitudes, although snow fell on the city and many other parts of the Wellington region during separate events in July and August 2011.

New Zealand - Queenstown

Because of its relatively moderate altitude (310 metres) but with high mountain surroundings, it has an oceanic climate (Köppen climate classification Cfb). Summer has long warm days with temperatures that can reach 30 °C while winters are cold with temperatures often in single digits with frequent snowfall, although there is no permanent snow cover during the year. As with the rest of Central Otago, Queenstown lies within the rain shadow of the Southern Alps, but being closer to the west coast the town is more susceptible to rain-bearing fronts compared to nearby Cromwell, Wanaka and Alexandra. The hottest recorded temperature in Queenstown is 34.1 °C (93 °F), while the coldest is −8.4 °C (17 °F).

New Zealand - Dunedin

The climate of Dunedin in general is temperate; however, the city is recognised as having a large number of microclimates and the weather conditions often vary between suburbs mostly due to the city's topographical layout. Under the Köppen climate classification, Dunedin features an oceanic climate. The city's climate is also greatly modified by its proximity to the ocean. This leads to mild summers and cool winters. Winter is frosty but sunny, snowfall is common but significant snowfall is uncommon (perhaps every two or three years), except in the inland hill suburbs such as Halfway Bush and Wakari, which tend to receive a few days of snowfall each year. Spring can feature "four seasons in a day" weather, but from November to April it is generally settled and mild. Temperatures during summer can briefly reach 30 °C (86 °F). Due to its extreme maritime influence, Dunedin's cool summers and mild winters both stand out considering its latitude.

Dunedin has relatively low rainfall in comparison to many of New Zealand's cities, with only some 750 millimetres (30 in) recorded per year. Dunedin is one of the cloudiest major centres in the country, recording approximately 1650 hours of bright sunshine per annum.

Inland, beyond the heart of the city and into inland Otago the climate is sub-continental: winters are quite cold and dry, summers hot and dry. Thick freezing ground fogs are common in winter in the upper reaches of the Taieri River's course around Middlemarch, and in summer the temperature occasionally reaches 30 °C (86 °F).

New Zealand - Christchurch

The city of Christchurch has a temperate, relatively dry climate with rain falling on fewer days than New Zealand's other major cities. Overall Christchurch's climate is comfortable all year round, although winter nights can be cold and frosts are common.

After a cold, frosty morning Christchurch usually enjoys a bright, sunny day with little or no wind. Warm Nor'wester winds are possible at any time of year, but usually during the summer months of December, January and February.

The average temperature of Christchurch in January is 22.5°C (72.5°F) and 11.3°C (52.3°F) in July. Temperatures in summer are often moderated by cool sea breezes, but a record temperature of 41.6°C (107°F) was reached in February 1973.

Winter temperatures often fall below 0°C (32°F) at night and there are on average 70 days of frost per year. Snow falls are usually expected once or twice a year on the hill suburbs of Christchurch and about once every second year on the plains.

Temperature Ranges:

  • Summer (Dec – Feb): Daytime 21°C – 23°C
  • Autumn (Mar – May): Daytime 14°C – 20°C
  • Winter (Jun – Aug): Daytime 11°C – 13°C
  • Spring (Sep – Nov): Daytime 15°C– 19°C

On average, Christchurch has 2100 hours of sunshine per year. The average annual rainfall for Christchurch is 648mm.

New Zealand - Blenheim

The climate is generally very settled, largely due to the rain shadow effect of the mountain ranges to the west which shelter Blenheim from the heaviest of rains that hit the western part of the South Island.

Summers are typically warm and dry while winters are normally cool and frosty with clear sunny days that follow. Snowfall is rare as it is sheltered from cold southerly weather by the mountain ranges to the south.

Thunderstorms are an uncommon occurrence due to the sheltered climate. There is a higher likelihood in summer, when afternoon heating can generate a build-up of clouds above the ranges.
